Peter's Weekly Walkthrough

Jairus, our melon buyer, enthusiastically commented that the Best Melons of the Year were here. He ranted and raved about the Peacock Orange Flesh Honeydews (25810-5/6ct) and how good they are. It seems these Orange Flesh Honeydews are also the only melons that Tom Brugato, the President of Pacific Coast Fresh, will eat. His comments are that it is consistently sweet and flavorful He said it was like a party in your mouth. Then he said that I could not share that line. I wonder if I will be seeing HR soon.

“Life is like a box of Squash. Ya never know what ya gonna get.” At least that is what these Mixed Organic Squashes (24233- 22lb) are like from A&A Organic Farms.  A&A Organic Farms is a Fair-Trade Certified packer that works with small and mid-size organic farms. A & A Organic Farms has a long tradition of giving back. We are proud to give a portion of our proceeds annually to local charities. We divide that amount evenly amongst our employees and let them decide on what charity they would like to support. We are happy to have a Box of Squash for you.

It is a blessed time of year when you are seeing boxes with local farms on the box. Farms like Gunkel Orchards with their Robada Red Apricots (25626-60-64ct) or Dickey Farms in Bingen Washington with their Yellow Squash (31734-22 lb). I notice that the local items have brighter color and are really the best out there. It is worth the effort for the best quality. Think about it, when was the last time you were in Bingen Washington? It is off the major highway but we are sending trucks out there to offer the bounty of the NW.

There has been some anticipation here waiting for Durst Organic Growers tomatoes to become available. It is starting out with only 3 varieties: Sweet 100 ( 23987-12/pint), Sungold (23986-12/pint) and Mixed Cherry (23980-12/pint) but that will increase up to 10 varieties at the height of the season. Sweet 100’s are the personal favorite of all. They are sweet and flavorful. Be good for a Sweet 100 Cherry tomato tarte tartin. In a non stick pan, warm up a fair amount of EVOO with some garlic slivers until aromatic. Don’t want it too hot so the tomatoes turn to mush, just to release the flavors of the garlic. Next goes in chopped thyme and a bunch of the Sweet 100 Cherry tomatoes. Give a bit of Sea Salt and Black Pepper. Give a little shake to coat everything. Then grab some puff pastry and place on top. Ok should have cut it into a round the size of the pan before hand…. In a 400* oven it goes till the puff pastry is cooked. Turn out on a plate at once. Use a light hand and drizzle with honey and balsamic vinegar. Perhaps just dot the tarte with both. Doesn’t need much of either.
